When I worked in a children’s hospital as a nurse, I realized that this job was not for the faint of heart. We often received children in serious condition, and some of them, unfortunately, did not survive.

I graduated with honors from medical school, but in addition to good professional qualities, a nurse, just like a doctor, must also have strong nerves. On the other hand, it is very important to maintain empathy and not to become stale, to remain human. This is a very delicate balance, which is very difficult to maintain.

My husband often talked me out of my job, suggested I transfer to an adult department. Seeing every time how I took children’s pain and suffering to heart. On the other hand, the realization that I was useful, that I could reduce that pain, somehow help the children gave me strength. But one incident has finally put everything in its place.

One day a very burnt girl was brought to our department. All her family, unfortunately, died in a fire and the little girl was left completely alone. I was immediately touched by her story. I even took extra shifts to be with the girl more often and take care of her.

For several weeks the girl’s condition was in jeopardy, but still, thanks to the skill of doctors, and probably my care, the girl gradually began to recover. Due to the lack of sleep I was several times late for duty. For this I was fired from the hospital. And, unfortunately, I could no longer help the girl.

I tried to forget the whole story for a while. But then I still went to my former colleagues to ask about the girl. They told me that she had been discharged and was now in an orphanage. I consulted with my husband, and we decided to execute the documents for the girl’s adoption. That’s how I lost my job, but I gained my daughter.
