Sometimes, looking back on the mistakes and stupid things we made when we were young, it’s so embarrassing. I’m no exception, I have one too.
When I first went to college, it wasn’t easy for me to make new friends. All the guys somehow quickly found friends, and I always sat alone, overheard their conversations. In my technical specialty were mostly guys, there were only a few girls, so I mostly heard guys discussing either studies or work, or their girlfriends. I wasn’t obsessed with the latter myself. Of course I would have liked to get a girlfriend, but with them I had the same situation as with my friends-I was a gray spot, blending in with the wall, and no one paid any attention to me.
And then I overheard my classmates sighing languidly at an actress in her third year at our college. She was unattainable and no one dared to talk to her. I accidentally, confused and nervous, lied to my lab partner that I was dating that actress. I didn’t even think it would work, but the next day half of the group wanted to be friends with me.
They asked me questions about her, and I only answered what I could find out on her social media and what I thought. I lied that I took her to a cafe, that we went to the movies on the weekend, that we were serious and that I even knew her parents. I can’t remember all the lies I told, but my ears burn when I try to remember the details.
Everyone in the group believed me unconditionally, except for the same partner, with whom we were often paired in the projects, because the last names were next to each other. He said with a kind grin that I was pouring it all out, that she had another boyfriend, but he was somehow not taken into account.
Everything came out on New Year’s Eve. We organized a holiday for our group, a couple of tables were booked in a cafe. All my friends begged me to bring the girl with me, but I did not have the courage as to recognize her, and to risk to call her somewhere. She didn’t even know I existed, as it seemed to me.
At the beginning of the evening I was forced to lie to my classmates again. I said that the girl also has his own party and she can not be in two places at once, and suddenly, just like in romantic movies, she was so beautiful and unattainable, came into the cafe. On the arm with a classmate. Everyone was so shocked, including me.
– She’s your girlfriend,” one of the guys yelled. – Why was she with him?
The girl came up with her companion and turned to me personally with a kind grin:
– Because I’m actually his girlfriend. Yes? – she asked me, waiting for confirmation.
It was the worst day of my life. I was very embarrassed to show up at school afterwards, I wanted to take a gap year or change colleges, but my friends supported me. They laughed at the situation and said that at least in my dreams I had met a girl like that. We practically never recalled that story afterwards, but I sometimes remember how ashamed I was after the lie. Actually, because I know how big and stupid a lie can be, how unexpectedly it can unfold and what it can lead to, and I try never to lie, even in small things. It is also possible to find a response from other people with honesty.
