Friends said the man was unlucky with his wife, but even more so with her parents. The girl grew up rich, she did not deny herself anything, she was sent to a good university and helped with work, but at the same time she tried to do everything for herself. Everything she earned was on her account, so that she could not spend a penny on her relatives or her beloved. Her father-in-law appreciated this very much in his daughter, called it “capital accumulation,” but he never missed an opportunity to scold the boy for not bringing enough money into the family.
– You have to be a pillar so that my daughter will be like a stone wall behind you, but will you be able to provide for her if she gets sick? Do you have enough money to take her abroad on vacation?
The question of money never crossed the minds of the newlyweds themselves, they were quite happy with the lack of a common treasury and a fair division of the rent and groceries, but the father-in-law expressed it to the man at every meeting. It got to the point where the guy dreaded every meeting with his wife’s parents and every time tried to find urgent business for that day. So he hoped to miss his father-in-law’s anniversary as well, but the girl literally dragged him by the ear, sat him down at the table and forced him to smile at all the invited colleagues of his father.
– What does your son-in-law do for a living? – A question came from one of the women in years.
– He is just an ordinary office worker, – the birthday boy said contemptuously, – brings home a penny, my daughter is the only one who carries the family on her shoulders…
The man was tired of enduring this mockery. He was always only humiliated, and it was not only upsetting, but also demotivating.
– First of all, I am not an “ordinary office worker,” I am the head of the planning team, and second of all, my salary is not a penny. Don’t you know that my wife and I pay for everything together? Unfortunately, I can’t become a director at the snap of my fingers and buy castles and expensive cars for my wife, but if you want the best for your daughter, why didn’t you help us buy a house? When you show by example, your own castle at least for yourself, then you will belittle my skills and salary.
My father-in-law hummed merrily at this. He clearly enjoyed seeing the man angry.
Later, after candles, cake and tea, when the man went out for a smoke break, his father-in-law joined him.
– Not bad,” he said thoughtfully, “you’re definitely making progress. You’re not stupid, you know your worth, and you can finally stand up for yourself. You don’t always have to be patient, otherwise you’ll just stay where you are.
The man realized that his father-in-law was deliberately pissing him off, bringing him to the boiling point to see how the young man would react. The money was not as important as the ability to protect his boundaries and those of the man he loved. The son-in-law immediately became more serious and solid in the eyes of his wife’s parents after his performance at the anniversary party.
