While my husband and I were poor, my mother-in-law bought herself a fur coat and a TV and ate caviar every night

But years later she got a “comeback”!

When I was 18, I got pregnant. My parents didn’t support me, they thought it was too early to have a baby. My husband had just been drafted into the army. Grandmothers on both sides of the family said in one voice: “The baby is your problem.

– I don’t want to take care of your baby right now,” my mother told me.

And my mother-in-law did not want to communicate with me at all.
I started living with my aunt on my father’s side.

She was 38 years old at the time, had many children, devoted her life exclusively to work. She did not judge my father:

– I understand him – it wasn’t an easy time when you were born. They put a lot of work into you. There were times when there was nothing to eat. My father unloaded wagons at night to earn some money.

– But now they are well provided for. Dad has a high salary, a two-bedroom apartment. Mom works, too. And I’m going to have a grandson soon. Will he really be eating them so much? – I ask my aunt.

– They just want to live more for themselves. You shouldn’t judge them. Later they will definitely come to their senses.
But I didn’t get any support from them. I packed all my things and went to live with my aunt.

When my husband came back from the army, our son was a year and a half old. During his absence my mother-in-law never came to see her grandson. My parents came to see me only twice.

My husband went to work as a car mechanic, he wanted to finish his studies at the same time, but it didn’t work out. We continued to live with my aunt. When my son started going to kindergarten and I got a job, my aunt had to move to another region. So we moved to a rented apartment.
After a while, my husband’s grandmother passed away.

My mother-in-law sold my grandmother’s apartment and did her own renovations and bought everything she wanted. My husband persuaded my mother not to sell the place, even offered to pay her a monthly payment and then buy back the apartment, but to no avail.

– Why should I sacrifice my interests and my life? I have wanted to do repairs for a long time. Would you do it for me? – my mother-in-law threw out in response to my son’s request.

Five years later our daughter was born. We were well aware that we needed our own home. My husband started working abroad. But collecting money for an apartment was not so easy. I continued to live with the children in a rented house.

My mother, on the other hand, stayed by herself in a three-bedroom apartment, my father divorced her two years ago, but she had no room for her own daughter and grandchildren. I couldn’t go to my mother-in-law either. She kept doing repairs and was in no hurry to help her son.

My husband was working abroad. After a couple of years we managed to buy our own place. Without any help.

Now our oldest son is finishing 9th grade and our youngest daughter is in second grade. I know well the value of money. We were saving every penny. There are no problems with that anymore. We each have our own car, and every year we vacation at the sea.

The only person we are really grateful to is our aunt. She can always call us and ask for help.

Our parents, on the other hand, have fallen on hard times. My mother was laid off, she called recently and asked for help, but I said no.

My mother-in-law has a similar situation. She retired and didn’t want to live modestly. She spent all the money she got from selling her apartment a long time ago. My husband also refused to help her. He advised me to sell the big apartment, renovated, and to buy a one-room apartment.

My husband and I do not owe anybody anything. We treat our children differently than our parents treat us. We will always help them in any way we can. I think that in our old age we will also be able to expect their help.
