Giusy Versace: “I am nobody’s spare tire. Now I will be at the side of people with the same values as me.”
So you too, Honorable Giusy Versace has decided to leave Forza Italia but with the risk of being a spare wheel for the Pd – as your former colleagues say – in this election campaign?
“First of all, who says I will face an election campaign? I have always seen myself as a person lent to politics living this legislature day by day and never thinking too much about the future working with commitment and above all consistency. If I continue to do so, it will be in the ways I see fit alongside people with the same values as me and who believe in them at least as much as I do. I don’t feel like anyone’s spare tire.”
But what is the political perspective he thinks for himself?
“I will certainly continue to lend my face, my name and my time to the noble causes for which I have always fought, I just have to decide whether to continue to do so outside or inside the institutions based also on my priorities and remaining faithful to my Catholic and liberal values.”
Doesn’t it seem paradoxical to leave FI now, on the threshold of a possible center-right government?
“It would have been paradoxical not to do it right now. Those who know me well know that I do not act out of opportunistic calculations as is often the case, but guided by common sense and generosity, qualities that have always been recognized in me and that could have distinguished again an FI that by no longer voting to trust Draghi has made itself complicit in a further crisis for our country and that in my opinion could have been avoided.
I left Forza Italia precisely so as not to betray myself, my values and ideals that, 4 years ago, prompted me to take up this new challenge to pursue my battles on disability, equal opportunities and sports in Parliament as well. For this I have already thanked President Berlusconi and the whole group, but the disappointment and bitterness over the choices made, the tones and terms used, with attacks even of a personal nature, I did not share and created no little discomfort for me. Out of conscience I saw no other choice!”
