After a negative result in June, the Argentine market returned to growth last month. With 36,035 new vehicles sold in July, growth over the same period in 2021 was 17.3 percent, according to Acara, a body representing dealerships in the country. The cumulative (231,968), negative until the previous month, is now up 1.6 percent. In this context, Fiat Cronos and Peugeot 208 turn out to be the two best-selling cars.
Fiat Cronos: the Italian automaker’s sedan is the best-selling car in Argentina again in July but Peugeot 208 comes dangerously close
Among automakers, Toyota’s dominance (8,416) has remained. With the exception of January, when current vice-leader Fiat (5,109) was No. 1, the Japanese brand has commanded the market since May last year. Fiat, by the way, was also about to lose the 2nd position to Volkswagen (5,083). Peugeot, with 3,739 units, overtook Chevrolet (3,002) in contention for 5th place. 10th, Jeep (689) suffered a drop of more than 37 percent.
In the model-to-model dispute, the Fiat Cronos sedan (2,975), despite being the only model in the top 10 with a negative result (-19 percent compared to last year), has achieved its 17th top spot in the past 19 months. Again, however, it was not easy to maintain the lead: with a growth of more than 100 percent, Peugeot 208 (2,761) was very close. Vice in the previous two months, Toyota Hilux (2,412) completed the podium, followed by Volkswagen Amarok (2,130).
So the Stellantis group can toast by placing as many as two cars in the top two positions among the best-selling cars in Argentina in July 2022. Peugeot 208 is getting closer and closer to Fiat Cronos, and overtaking could happen in the coming months.
