Laura was the first beauty at university and dreamed of meeting a worthy candidate for marriage. Among the many suitors found the one in whom the girl fell in love at first sight. The couple met for almost four years.
The young couple got married at the very end of their studies, on the eve of their graduation. The thing is that Laura was pregnant with a child, so the wedding had to be played in advance. The truth is, Laura and Alex wanted to do it a little later, but life made some changes. Alex was not from around here.
At seventeen, the boy came to work part-time from the village, went to college and remained there to live. When his college years were behind him, the young men moved into an apartment with Laura and her mother. The mother-in-law was very happy that she would now live with the young couple and bring up her grandson. The apartment was small, but they lived together in friendship and tried not to quarrel over trifles. After a while Alex found a good job.
The salary was also decent, so the man offered to rent a separate small apartment. Laura supported her lover, but only her mother was against the move of the young and her beloved grandson. The woman persuaded them to stay for a couple of years until the baby grew up. She was worried that Laura wouldn’t be able to cope on her own.
When her grandson turned three, Laura found a good job and decided it was time to leave her parents’ home. The young couple moved into a new apartment, and the baby stayed with his grandmother. They agreed that he would spend all five days at his grandmother’s, and at weekends his parents would take him to their place. At first all was well. Grandma spent all day babysitting the baby and trying to give him all her love, care, and attention.
Except that she told her friends that grandchildren were a great burden. And her attitude towards Laura and Alex, radically changed. Her mother decided to manipulate the young people. The woman kept talking about her feat of raising her grandson and began to quietly beg for her services, which she needed very much.
She kept tugging on the youngsters over various trifles, pretending to be sick and miserable. She would call in the middle of the night and ask for a faucet or a light bulb to be changed. Alex, of course, could not refuse his mother-in-law’s help and rushed to her. The woman even managed to persuade the young men to change the windows in her apartment and buy her a new winter coat and boots. Alex was constantly irritated by this and assured his young wife that it would be better for the child to babysit. It would, in his opinion, would be much cheaper. After several months of this endless hassle, the man flipped out and said he was going to leave the family because he could no longer stand the behavior of his mother-in-law.
Alex confessed that he liked another girl who had recently started working for him. The man also noted that the mother of this stranger was far away, so he could live peacefully now. Alex kept his word, took all his things and left the girl. Laura
sobbed bitter tears into her pillow for days and nights, and only blamed herself for “taking advantage” of her mother a few years ago. The woman’s kindness had turned into a family tragedy. Laura decided that she was going to take the child to live with her and raise him on her own. That’s how families fall apart.
