For a week now my wife and I have been arguing about the baby’s name. She insists that the mother must name the child herself, since she is giving birth. But I’m not an outsider either, I’m a father after all. I do not agree with this point of view, I think my wife is selfish. And we are going to have a son! My brother and his wife agreed that she would name the girl and he would name the boy. My niece’s name is Margarita, which my brother doesn’t like, but the agreement must be respected. He is waiting for his son to choose a name.
I suggested my wife do the same, but she said she wasn’t going to copy someone else’s behavior. I tried to discuss this with my mother-in-law because she once told me that she and my father had a similar argument. My wife’s mother thinks that we’re not picking a name, we’re just trying to outdo each other, and that spouses should compromise. I agree with her, but let her influence her daughter first.
I feel like we can’t name our son together and I have to give in. My father says that he didn’t care what name I would have, as my mother called it, so he got used to it. Said that I came up with the problem on an even footing, and you need to think about your health, not such trifles. I do not agree with him, they called me Valentin, which I do not like. What ever I was not called at school classmates and among them the most innocuous – Valko and valenok.
Asked several married friends and colleagues who already have children, how they dealt with this issue. Almost all the children were named by their wives, only one chose the name of his son, but here it was a coincidence that his wife liked it. Some have come to terms with it, while others remember the resentment and say that the joy of having a child was spoiled. I have the same feeling, although I was very excited when I found out there was going to be a son.
I suspect that my wife wants to name my son Andrew after her dead brother. If so, I will write down the name I like, or the first one that comes up. I’m not superstitious, but I’ve heard it’s not the right thing to do. It’s better to be on the safe side.
