Buick Regal and Opel Insignia are cousin cars, with the former retiring two summers ago, more precisely in August 2020. And now the time is coming for the German car to say goodbye as well, with Opel confirming that the Insignia will go out of production at the end of 2022.
The news came from a company spokesperson at the microphones of Automobilwoche, who added, “The discontinuation of Insignia production with its non-electrifiable platform favors the faster ramp-up of Astra production.” In fact, the new Opel Astra plug-in hybrid seen at MIMO 2022 is also attracting the attention of those who were interested in its larger sibling, another reason for the removal of the Insignia from the lineup.
However, this is not a farewell, but only a goodbye, because the Opel Insignia will return in the future with an electric powertrain, although it will be different from the current model. Apparently, in fact, the Insignia of the future will be an electric crossover with a sportier feel, and no longer the sedan or station wagon we know (speaking of which, the upcoming electric Alfa Romeo Giulia may also become a crossover).
Rumor has it that it will have a raised stance but not as much as an SUV, and so it is not a given that it may have some similarities to the Citroën C5 X, its cousin from the Stellantis group. Finally, there is speculation that the new electrified Insignia could arrive around 2025, helping Opel in achieving a full electric range by 2028.
