To be honest, I didn’t like Olivia much when Henry first brought her home to meet us. She was just an ordinary country girl, nothing remarkable. Except for her gladiatorial, Roman nose and paint-burnt hair, which had grown back. Here it is at once clear that she was a lady from the deep countryside.
She hardly spoke at the table, only kept silent and quietly devoured the food I had prepared. It seemed to me at the time that she had never seen food or had been starving for years. Usually in the villages, all the girls are well-fed. I bet they grew up on pork and chicken and potatoes.
Olivia was just like that – skinny, with a strange face. Of course, it’s not for me to judge my son’s choice, much less his daughter-in-law’s appearance. But still – Henry’s a handsome guy, not that I made it up and said so. All the people said he was a good-looking guy and that his children would be handsome if he found a girl just as handsome. And then he found Olivia, who looked like Koschei. What kind of beautiful children are we talking about? That’s why I don’t understand men’s logic. Anyway, I’ll admit that Olivia’s a great hostess. Right after the wedding they went to live in the apartment that belonged to Henry’s grandmother. How many times I didn’t come over, and sometimes I came over unannounced to catch Olivia in the act, as they say, everything was always perfectly clean and tidy. I opened the fridge and there were several dishes and dessert.
All the shelves are full of food, all the clothes are clean and ironed. In short, everything is perfect. Even after the birth of two children, Olivia kept the house perfectly clean and there was always plenty of food, and the children were well-groomed, clean, developed. Ten years of their life went by like that. Whenever I visited, Olivia was in a filthy robe, tired, her eyes red from lack of sleep, her nails without manicure. What can I say? The village is a village. Her son seemed to be satisfied with everything. The main thing is that the mother and a good hostess. And then I came back, and I couldn’t recognize Olivia.
She has gorgeous, thickened long hair, dyed platinum blonde, fresh manicure and pedicure, expensive dress, and walks around the house on high heels. When I saw her, I crouched down. Was that our Olivia? I couldn’t believe it. She told me she found a job and now she goes to work. You have to look pretty there. Did I believe it? Of course you didn’t. Why would a rural Olivia dress up for work like that? She has a lover, that’s for sure. With this thought, I turned to my son. “Have you noticed anything strange about your wife’s behavior? What if she has someone. Henry yelled at me. Like, how dare I think such things about his wife. Well, it’s a fact. Who is she dressing up for? So I decided to spend a couple of days keeping an eye on her, where she goes, who she meets. I’m sure rural Olivia found herself a wealthy beau, which is why she changed so much.
